AMA Pro Flat Track: Weirbach Racing's Rob Pearson #27 Talks about Savannah, Volusia & Daytona

Rob Pearson works it on the #27 Memphis Shades/Yamaha/Wiseco/K&N-sponsored YZ450F during heat race 3 action at round 9 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship season at the Peoria TT on August 12.  After qualifying in the 9th-place spot for the day, the Morton, IL. resident set sail during the heat race to earn a 3rd-place finish to mark his spot in the 18-rider National main event later in the day.  Pearson went on to one of his best finishes of the season to card a 7th-place spot, which helped him to finish out the season as the 11th-ranked rider in the overall standings in The Rolling Thunder Show.

Having been associated with his Yamaha program for the last several seasons in the Singles Series events, 'Bugs' announced over the off-season that he was switching teams and would be riding for the Iowa-based Weirbach Racing team for the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship season.  And as most know, Weirbach's program has been headlined by their superior Hondas with which they were able to win the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles Championship with, along with then-rider Mikey Martin. 

After running a big handful of the Steve Nace Indoor Dirt Track Series events during the off-season in DuQuoin, IL., Pearson and the Weirbach Racing team were able to get acclimated to one another and get some seat time in for Rob on the team's Honda CRF450R rockets.

The team made their 'official' 2013 flat track season debut during Bike Week activities, and got a chance to see how they would match-up to the rest of the competition.  Competing at the Savannah and Volusia events of the Steve Nace Racing AMA All Star Series presented by Golden Tyre before the season-opening rounds at Daytona, the team got a chance to roll out various pieces of their arsenal in preparation for the upcoming Grand National tour. 

Rob not only spent more time on the team's fast Hondas, but got a chance to sample their XR750 and Suzuki SV650-based Twins rides, and came away with some great news in anticipation of getting their new Kawasaki 650R-based Twin effort rolling before the first Twins Series event in Stockton come May.  And he came away with some great info and confidence that should help both he and the boys in Iowa happy as they get ready for the summer long stretch in the greatest racing series on two wheels in the world.

Ottumwa, Iowa -- March 22, 2013

Bike Week 2013 is all finished up and it went over pretty well this year.  I got my first chance to race a twin this season at Savannah.  Dick met me for the practice day and we got the Weirbach Racing XR 750 on the track.

The next day was the ALL Star race, the bike was working well and I finished 2nd place in the heat, we didn’t nail the set up for the main and ended up 7th.  Weirbach’s 450 Honda was strong out of the truck and we ended up with a 3rd place finish in the main on the fast red clay half mile. 

The speed of the Honda makes me think we should have something good for the Peoria TT.  I was right at home on the Harley and I know it’s capable of winning until our Racing Unlimited Kawasaki’s are ready for the track.   

A couple days after Savannah we raced at the Volusia County half mile, another Steve Nace All Star event.  We left the Harley in the truck and worked on Weirbach’s Suzuki SV 650.  This was my first time on the smaller Suzuki twin as I have had some time on the 1000cc model.  I really like how the SV ran and how it jumped off the starting line. 

I got the start in the heat race and stayed out in front of Brandon Robinson and Jared Mees to sit on the pole for the main.  I spun pretty bad coming off the start in the main and ended up coming forward to a 3rd place finish.  I also got my R&R Racing Yamaha on the track for the first time this year at Volusia.  I was running 2nd in the main but left a little too much room and allowed Mees to take me off the bottom of the groove and fall back to 4th.  I have to thank Randy Rothe for the help with the Yamaha.   

Daytona round 1 started great with a 2nd overall in qualifying.  The Weirbach Racing Honda was working good in the heat but I got moved off the groove by Johnny Lewis and headed for a semi.   I worked my way into the main with a 2nd in the semi for a third row start in the main.  The track was getting pretty rough and I got bounced around some but still moved forward for an 11th.

The next day round 2, again went well in qualifying with 5th overall.  I had the hole shot in my heat until a first turn crash brought out the red flag.  The restart wasn’t as good for me but I challenged Mees for 2nd on the last lap and ended up direct transferring with a 3rd. 

This put me in the middle of the second row for the main, which was a tuff spot to start.  I got funneled  back pretty quickly.  I made my way thru traffic for a respectable 9th on the smoother but slick Daytona track. 

The best finishes I have ever had in Daytona and just a few points from the overall top ten .

AMA Flat Track: Weirbach Racing Announces Rider Rob Pearson for 2013 Grand National Team, Dominic Collindres Returns to Pro Singles Team

2011 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship team Weirbach Racing announced yesterday that they would be adding veteran rider and Illinois-resident Rob Pearson to their team for the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season to ride the team's new-for-2013 Kawasakis in the Expert Twins Series events.  Pearson will join rider Dominic Collindres, who contested the Pro Singles Championship for the Iowa-based team from the Peoria TT event on through the end of the season, eventually finishing in the 4th-ranked spot.

Pearson is shown talking in the rear of the #27 Eaken Racing/KK Motorcycle Supply/Dick Ford/K&N-sponsored team's pit area, with Eaken Racing's C&J-framed Kawasaki and Roeder Racing XR750 awaiting the day's activities at the Springfield Mile II on September 16.

Pearson rode the team's Kawasaki to a season and career-best 4th-place finish earlier in the year at round 11 of the 2012 season at the Knoxville Half-Mile, after having taken the #27 Kawi to a 7th-place finish at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile in mid-August.

The Morton, IL.-resident started the season off on the #27 Memphis Shades/Yamaha/Wiseco/K&N-backed XR750 and took home a 7th-place finish for his efforts on the Babe DeMay-tuned machine at the Ohio National Championship event at the Allen County Fairgrounds. 

Rob also took home a season-ending 4th-place finish for the Memphis Shades team at the Pomona Half-Mile, adding to his nine top-10s for the 2012 season which saw him place in the 9th-place spot in the overall championship standings. 

Pearson got a chance to ride the USC Racing Kawasaki towards the end of the 2011 season at the Springfield Mile II, and then spent some time this year riding for the late Skip Eaken's race team on their C&J-framed Japanese parallel twin.  Now with the 2013 season coming up fast, Bugs will get a chance to throw his leg over another Kawi as Weirbach Racing has also announced their involvement with Racing Unlimited Kawasaki for the new season ahead.

Dominic Collindres follows team owners Ted and Richard Weirbach out to the staging area for heat race #1 at round 13 of the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship season at the Springfield Mile II on September 16.  The California rider signed with the team just over a month prior to the final mile event of the season and won his first race out at the Peoria TT on the #66Y Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett/Spectro-sponsored Honda CRF450R.

Collindres ended the season as the 4th-ranked rider in the 2012 Pro Singles Championship and will be returning to the team for the 2013 season in hopes of garnering himself his first championship and taking a second title in the Pro Singles Championship for the Iowa-based Weirbach Racing team.

December 20, 2012, Ottumwa, Iowa – Weirbach Racing announces the sponsorship support of two racers and a partnership with Racing Unlimited, for the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Series.   Dominic Colindres #66Y, from Brisbane, Ca. and National number 27, Rob Pearson, from Morton, IL., will run full campaigns for Weirbach Racing in 2013.

Colindres returns from last year’s team, which he joined in August 2012.  Dominic had a strong last half of the season, winning 1 event, and standing on the podium at 2 others.  He finished 4th in overall points in the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship and will be contending for the 2013 title on the teams' Honda 450s.

Colindres’ take on 2013, “So happy to be back with Weirbach racing for the 2013 season.  After winning our first race and having a handful of podiums, I believe we have a strong chance at winning the championship this year.”

Pearson will be joining the team as a new member for 2013 and will compete for the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com and Lucas Oil, in both the Expert Singles and Twins competition.
               

In the 4 GNC Expert Singles events, Pearson will be riding the team's Honda 450s.  Last year Pearson finished 6th in the Expert Twins class and 9th in the combined AMA GNC series.

"I'm really excited for this opportunity with Weirbach Racing and Racing Unlimited.  Combining all our resources is going to prove us to be a championship contending race team,"  said Pearson.

Dick Weirbach announced, “We are joining forces with Alan Rodenborn, owner of Racing Unlimited Kawasaki, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.  Alan will provide 2 C&J-framed Kawasaki’s for Rob to ride in the AMA Twins championship.  Pearson will also have the team’s Harley-Davidson XR750 at his disposal.“
               

After several years as a drag racer, Alan Rodenborn has focused on road racing for the past 14 seasons.  Alan’s Development on the Ninja 650 platform began in 2006.  Rodenborn bikes have won over 40 “Battle Of Twins” National events, en route to 3 national titles.

A cylinder head and engine specialist, Rodenborn will not only be handling the engines on the team's Kawasakis, but will be providing engines and components to other Kawasaki GNC racers and teams.

Rodenborn is quoted as saying “It’s very exciting to be building engines for GNC racing, and is an honor to be working with a team of this caliber.  I’m confident that Dick, Ted and Rob’s experience, will make my transition into dirt track racing a smooth one.”

AMA Flat Track: Weirbach Racing's Dominic Collindres Talks Tucson Pro Singles Round 15

In a class by itself, the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship Series has more then proved to the fans and folks all around that the racing is close, tight, competitive and intense in it's fourth year of existence as the 'junior' part of the program in the AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship series.

One of the teams that has campaigned the Pro Singles Series steadily for the at least three of those seasons is the Weirbach Racing team out of The Hawkeye State in Ottumwa, Iowa, and they have done one heckuva job picking the young talent that is coming up through the ranks to rider their immaculately prepared machinery. 

Regular supporters of the Big Red 'H' (as in Honda, the most popular weapon of choice in the ultra-competive Pro Singles Series) the team has been rolling out Honda CRF450Rs on a regular basis the last three seasons for riders including Mikey Labelle, Mikey Martin ('11 Pro Singles Champion), Ryan Wells and their most recent prospective champion in the class, Dominic Collindres.

Collindres signed with the team just before the Peoria TT on August 12, and promptly went out and won his first-ever race in the class for his new employers, and has since climbed into the 4th-place spot in the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship point standings.

Ottumwa, Iowa -- October 8, 2012

This past weekend was the AMA Grand National half-mile held in Tucson,
Arizona.  I had no idea what to expect heading to this track.  It hasn¹t been
raced in awhile and no one knew what it would be like.  I was hoping it
would be a nice blue groove.  I am going into the race fourth in points and
hoped to have a strong finish to stay in fourth.

During the first and second qualifying sessions the bike was all over the
place and the track had deep ruts, holes and dust.  I qualified tenth both
sessions and felt ok.  We decided at the last minute to change to a different
bike and gearing for the last session and I ended up qualifying fourth in
the final timed practice.

Heading into the heat races we didn't make any changes and I would be
starting on the front row on the outside.  I was fourth off the line and got
into third by turn three.  The next lap I made a pass for second going into
three and stayed there the whole race.  With the solid second in the heat, I
felt comfortable for the main.

In the main I was lined up third from the inside but I got a bad start and
was in about fourth or fifth heading into the first turn.  Going into turn
three I dove to the inside and was already up to second.  Texter and I
started battling for a couple laps and that's when the red flag came out due
to a timing problem.

It was a complete restart and I was third off the start and was riding in
third until another red flag came out.  This time off the start I got shuffled
backwards to about sixth place.  Another red flag came out and it would
be a single file restart this time.

The rest of the race I was trying to fight my way back into the top-5,
but it didn't happen.v I ended up getting seventh.  Red flags were definitely
not my friend today, dealing with all the red flags this year has been pretty
tough for me.  I am still fourth in points but Texter closed to within 4 with her win.

Next weekend is the season finale in Pomona, California, and I'm ready
to have a strong finish to end the season and finish fourth in the
overall championship points.

AMA Flat Track: Weirbach Racing & Dominic Collindres #66Y Santo Rosa Mile Pro Singles Report

Collindres has proven to be a great match for the 2011 AMA Pro Singles Championship-winning team and since hooking up with the Hawkeye State residents has taken the #66Y Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett/Spectro-sponsored Honda CRF450R to one win (the team's first race together at the Peoria TT on August 12), a 2nd-place finish (at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile just six days later), an 11th-place finish (Knoxville), a pair of 9th-place finishes (Springfield ST above and SF Mile II) and last weekend's 5th-place finish at Santa Rosa.

Without a doubt if these guys had hooked-up early in the season they would be on their way to their first championship together and Weirbach's second as an AMA Pro Singles Championship team.  Collindres missed five events this season and other than points leader Stephen Vanderkuur is the only other rider in the top-4 in points to have missed any rounds in the 2012 season, which in itself is quite an accomplishment in the fast-paced and close racing seen in the junior-feeder series.

With two rounds left to battle in the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship season, Collindres still has a good chance of moving up into the top-3, sitting 19 points out of 3rd heading into the Tucson Half-Mile round tomorrow.  With the quality of the equipment that the father and son duo of Weirbach Racing puts together coupled with Dominic's obvious riding talent, we could be looking at the future champion of the series should they be able to continue on together for the 2013 season.

Dominic Colindres race report from Santa Rosa Mile

Last weekend was the AMA Grand National event held at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, California.  This race was the closest race to my house out of all the races in this season.  I felt a little uncomfortable heading into this event because it was a cushion and I'm still a little off pace on cushions.   It was also a mile with tight corners, which I don't have much experience on.  I would be heading into this event fifth in points and hopefully go into fourth in the overall points.

We made another change right before the heat and felt like we were ready for another heat win. I got a little tangled with some riders off the start and ended up fourth into the first turn. After lap two I moved into first and stayed there for the rest of the heat. I felt very good and felt that I could have a shot at winning the main. For the main I had second choice on the front row.  I picked the outside next to Vanderkuur.

 

I got the holeshot but was passed down the back straight.  Vanderkuur was on rails and he quickly pulled away.  I was in a good four rider battle the whole race with Shoemaker, Spencer, and Anderson.  I was having trouble hooking up down low so I moved to the outside and started following Spencer.  I ended up a close fifth.

 

I feel good with my result because I see that I'm getting way better on cushions and miles.  I'm also learning how to adapt to new tracks a lot faster which is key to doing good at a national.  I am now tied for fourth in points and with some good results at the next two races, third place in points doesn't seem to be impossible to make happen.

The youngster from California made the 32-rider cutoff out of the 55 riders on-hand to make a qualifying effort in the last National to be held at the Multipurpose Arena on the Illinois State Fairgrounds for the foreseeable future.

The new signee for the Weirbach Racing team out of Ottumwa, Iowa has earned his spot on the 2011 Pro Singles Championship-winning effort, taking his first-ever win in the series while on his first outing for the team at Peoria on August 12, and since has shown marked and solid efforts to move him and the team into the 5th-place spot in the Pro Singles standings after strong rides to 9th-place in both the short track and mile rounds at last weekend's rain delayed event.

With three rounds left in the season at Santa Rosa, Tucson and the season-ending race at Pomona, Collindres and the team sit just 33 points out of the first-place spot, and are but guaranteed a top-5 finish for the season, and possibly top-4 depending on how quickly former team member Ryan Wells returns from his broken collarbone suffered at the Springfield Short Track round.

This past weekend was the AMA Pro Grand National at Knoxville Raceway in
Iowa.

Coming into this race I felt that I could do good because it is similar to my hometown track. I would also be heading into this event being sixth place in the overall points standings.

Qualifying did not go too good. I struggled with learning the track but got
faster and faster every time I went out. The bike felt good and I felt comfortable heading into the heat races. We made a couple of big changes to the bike for the heat race.

I was late for my heat race and had to start on the fourth row. A couple of
riders up front jumped the start so I was joined by a couple of more riders
on the last row. I was fighting the bike the whole time in the heat race and
ended up third to last.

For the semi we put the bike back to where it was and I started on the
third row. I got a good start and passed a bunch of riders every lap. I
ended up getting a second-place finish.

Now for the main. I got a decent start from the third row and found myself
battling my way into the top-ten. I was stuck behind a couple of riders for
the first 3/4 of the race. I ended up passing them around the outside. I saw
places fifth through tenth a straightaway in front of me and put my head
down. I caught up to the group on the last lap and finished eleventh.
Overall I felt good because I found the fast line, put in some fast laps,
and will be more prepared for next year.

This weekend was the AMA Pro Grand National doubleheader in Springfield,
Illinois.

Starting off the weekend was the short track on Saturday. I didn't
expect to do too good because I tend to favor blue grooves over cushions. After the short track would be the mile on Sunday. I was ready to redeem myself on the mile since I didn't make the main the previous race.

To start things out I actually felt pretty good on the track during qualifying and got faster every time I went out. I ended up qualifying eleventh, which gave me a front row start for the heat race. We didn't make a single change from after qualifying to the heat race.
In the heat race I got a great start from the outside and found myself in
second. Isennock led the whole race and I watched to try and pick up places
to improve. I finished second in the heat and felt comfortable for the main.

In the main I got tangled with Maguire off the start and was fifth into
the first turn. I passed three riders going into turn three and was riding
around in second for a couple laps. I made a couple of mistakes and a few
riders got around me. The red flag came out and the race was a single file
restart.

I tried to make the same pass going into turn three but found myself going into a high-side but somehow saved it. I got back onto the track in ninth and finished there. I felt comfortable with the way things went and definitely saw places to improve for next time.

Next was the mile. I felt really fast but my qualifying times just didn't
show it. I qualified outside the top twenty and that put me on the second row for the heat race.

In the heat race I got a great start from the second row and was in about
fourth place. I got into first place going into turn three. The whole race
Isennock and I battled back and fourth, then I got passed for the win by
Andersen. I ended up with a second in the heat and was on the front row for
the main.

In the main I was second off the start and battled the whole first part of
the main with Isennock, Shoemaker, and Vanderkuur. We went back and forth
and I never found myself outside the top-five. A red flag came out due to a
blown up bike and a couple riders down.

I was lined up second on the singlefile restart behind Vanderkuur. I got the whole shot and led the race until coming out of turn three, got drafted by at least ten riders. Vanderkuur and I found ourselves outside the top-ten in just a straightaway. I made a pass or two and ended up ninth. I'm happy with the result because I definitely had the speed but that's just how Springfield will play out sometimes.

AMA Flat Track: Weirbach Racing's Dominic Colindres is Moving Fast After 2nd-Place Finish in Pro Singles Ride at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile

Things may look calm and relaxed at this moment in the Weirbach Racing team pit area at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile round of the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship Series, but believe me things start to get heated up real quickly just a few minutes after this shot was taken as the 2011 Pro Singles Series Championship-winning team was getting ready to go out and make their mark in the ultra-competitive 'junior' series that accompanies the AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com schedule.

And to say that Richard Weirbach (far right, arms folded) and his son Ted (background left, with water bottle) know how to scout out talent is a serious understatement for the Iowa-based Pro Singles Championship competitors.

After winning the '11 Championship with rider Mikey Martin, the team was forced to revamp over the off season and went into the first events of the season at Daytona in March with former Horizon Award winner Ryan Wells as their rider.  Things were looking good for the team as they were fighting for the championship when suddenly just before the Peoria TT round on August 12, Wells decided to go it alone for the remainder of the season.  But instead of sitting back and wondering what to do, the Weirbachs put their efforts into high gear in order to find a rider for one of the biggest events of the season with just a few days to go before the bikes hit the track.

Well, the talent they picked in Dominic Colindres was by far an excellent choice, as their new rider went out and won the first event of his career with the team and almost immediately jumped into the fire of fighting for the Pro Singles Championship.

Six days later and the team was at the Indiana State Fairgrounds mile oval for their second race outing together, and Colindres and the team fought through what was considered a mediocre qualifying spot, made some changes and adjustments, and by the end of the evening the California teenager had brought the #66Y Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett/Spectro Oils-sponsored Honda CRF450R home into the 2nd-place spot.  And he has also vaulted himself into the 6th-place spot in the 2012 Pro Singles Championship, only 30 points out of the series' lead.

With a 1.5 finishing average in their first two outings together, again the Weirbach Racing team and rider Dominic Colindres have put a firm exlamation point on their quest to repeat as series champions and garner a rider championship for the youngster from California.  Pretty impressive in anyone's book and assuredly in mine and those that know racing in The Rolling Thunder Show and the greatest racing series on wheels in the world.

With any luck, the upcoming rounds at the Springfield Short Track and Springfield Mile II won't get rained out/postponed/canceled and the little team that could can again put their mark on the rest of the field at the Labor Day Weekend gathering inside the Illinois State Fairgrounds.  At this point, the rest of the field might want rain to wash out the great run these guys are having!

Indy Mile Race Report

 

Ottumwa, Iowa -- August 29, 2012

This past weekend was the Indy Mile in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Based on the number of riders signed up and MotoGP being the next day, I would consider this one of the biggest races of the year.  I didn't know what to expect heading into this event.  This would be my third mile and first mile being on the Weirbach Racing team.  I thought I could have another podium finish since I had a 4th-place at the previous mile in Sacramento, California.

I started out the day by meeting Ted Weirbach for the first time and then looking over the bike and discussing bike setup.  I walked out onto the track and saw that it was a cushion.  I asked some riders that previously rode this track how it would be and they told me it would groove up, which is to my liking.

 

I went out for the free practice and struggled with set up and the track.  The gearing was off and I qualified 25th.  We changed the gearing and I qualified 20th in the next session.  Dick and I made some more changes with gearing and suspension for the heat race.

My poor qualifying position put me on the back row for the heat.  I got a great start and was in about 4th place.  I started falling back a little bit but then started to figure out the track.  I was riding the first half of the race in about 6th-place but then started to pass riders every lap.  I caught up to the top-3 and finished the heat in the third position. 

Right before the main event, Dick and I decided to make a last minute gearing change.  I was lined up on the first row, second from the outside.  The race started and I got a horrible start.  Somehow I got up to second place but then overshot turn 3.  The race was red flagged due to a crash in turn 2.

 

I got the hole shot on the restart and led the first couple of laps.  Vandekuur, Palmer, and I battled the whole race, passing each other a couple times a lap.  The white flag came out and I felt like I was in a position to win.  I slipped up a little in turn 3 and Vandekuur pulled away.   I caught up just to finish .057 seconds behind.  This second place was very good for me and the team and gives me good confidence for the rest of the races.

The next race is Springfield, Illinois with a short track on Saturday and the mile on Sunday.  Stop by the pit and say hey!

AMA Flat Track: Weirbach Racing's Dominic Colindres Wins Peoria TT Pro Singles Final in Very First Ride for the 2011 Pro Singles Championship-Winning Team

Dominic Colindres on the #66Y Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett/Spectro Oils-sponsored Honda CRF450R displays the form that took the rookie rider to the win at the Peoria TT round of the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Series final on Sunday, August 12.  Colindres, who had never ridden or even seen the bike before the team rolled into Thunder Valley on Sunday morning, made the deal with team owner Richard Weirbach just prior to the event's date.

With original rider Ryan Wells #94B splitting from the team last Tuesday, Richard and Ted Weirbach had to do some scrambling in order to get their 2011 AMA Pro Singles Championship-winning machines on the track for Sunday's round 9 at the 65th running of the TT event.

Richard was able to put the deal together with the California rider after reviewing and talking with several riders, and he and the team obviously made a stellar choice with Colindres, who went out and won the fast heat in the Pro Singles class and went on to beat Stephen Vanderkuur by just over 1 second after the final was delayed due to a red flag stoppage that put rider Jake Constantine down with a broken wrist and seriously rung bell.

But coming through like the future champ he looks to be, Dominic again got the jump on the re-start and never looked back, taking the team's red and gold Honda to the front and the victory in front of a packed house.

This past week has been a little difficult to say the least, with Ryan telling me on Tuesday he was leaving the team. I spent all day Wednesday on the phone with potential riders, knowing that Sunday was the grand National TT at Peoria and I really wanted to have a rider for that event.

Late Wednesday Dominic Colindres #66Y( who lives in California) and I got a deal put together for Peoria and the Indy Mile with plans to put a deal together for the rest of the season.  While Thursday and Friday I got the bikes ready he made arrangements to fly to the Midwest on Saturday.

We met Sunday morning at the track just in time to unload the van and get to tech inspection.  I had him look the bike over and see if he wanted to make any changes before he hit the track for the first time ever on our bike and the famous TT track.  He adjusted the clutch lever on the bar a little and said I am ready, and that was the only change we made all day.

Each practice he got a little faster and ended up qualifying 4th overall.  We were in the first heat and he got a great start and led it wire to wire plus being the fastest heat so he had the pole in the final.

Same result in the final great start and led every lap for the win.   Great ending to a difficult week.  Several riders were hurt Sunday, they are in our thoughts and we wish them a speedy recovery.  Below is the write up from AMA Pro Racing web page.

Pole sitter Dominic Colindres (Weirbach Racing) got off to an incredible start in the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles main event, but it was erased as a four-bike pile-up on lap two forced the red flags to come out and demand a restart.  However, the restart had no effect on Colindres as he got the holeshot for the second time and never looked back on his way to victory.

There was no denying Colindres as he was on a different planet winning by more than a full second over second-place finisher Stephen Vanderkuur (Parkinson Brothers Racing Honda). Justin Reed (Rich King Racing) claimed third place with a solid performance on the KTM 450 SX-F.

The most exciting battle was the race for the fourth and fifth slots where the margin between six riders was less than a second.  Rodney Spencer Jr. (831 Pinnit) and Nick Mataya (Shoe Racing) snuck in to round out the top five, respectively.

"I got the holeshot after the restart, usually something goes wrong in a situation like that but it actually helped me," Colindres said.  "I really liked the track and I just want to congratulate Stephen (Vanderkuur), he was on me the whole way and really gave me a good run.  I also want to thank the fans and everyone who came out and cheered me on."

Next up for us this weekend is the Indy Mile.

AMA Flat Track: Weirbach Racing's Ryan Wells #94B Pro Singles Report for the Sacramento Mile

Ryan Wells talks with AMA Pro Flat Track announcer Barry Boone after winning heat race #1 at the Lima Half-Mile on June 30, round 5 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season.  Wells had just won his qualifying heat by over 3.4 seconds to 2nd-place rider Austin Luczak.  Wells would finish the evening out by coming home in the 4th-place spot on the #94B Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett/Spectro Oils-sponsored Honda CRF450R behind winner Zakk Palmer, 2nd-place rider Benjamin Myers and 3rd-place finisher Jacob Constantine.

The New York State resident took part in his second mile event of his Pro Singles Championship career last weekend at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento, improving on his 10th-place finish from the Springfield Mile I round in late May by finishing in the 6th-place spot, in a race that was won by Shayna Texter, crossing the line to take the checkers just over 2.3 seconds behind the DFW Honda-mounted winner.

In his first full season of competition, Wells is proving himself quickly to be a quick study, at just over 16 years old.  After starting off the season at Daytona with a DNQ and a win, Wells has been on a strong run as the series gets into the meat of the schedule.  In the last three rounds (Lima, Hagerstown and Sacto) Wells has brought home finishes of 4th, 3rd and 6th-places, and has held on to the second spot in the Pro Singles Championship points tally for the last few rounds, and with the powerhouse Weirbach Racing team behind will undoubtedly be fighting for the #1 plate in the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship come season end.

Sacramento Mile report:

On July 28th, the Weirbach Racing team traveled out to Sacramento, California for the historic Mile!  Showing up at my 2nd mile ever, I was still in need of figuring out everything that needs to be done to come out victorious. 

We started out the day qualifying 12th which would give me the last spot on the front row.  In the heat race I immediately ran into the same problems with drafting that I also had in Springfield.  Struggling through the heat I finished 6th which would still be a direct transfer, but I knew I needed to figure it out coming main event time.

I started the main event on the very inside of the second row.  Out of the first turn I sat around 12th and finally figured out what I was missing this whole time with drafting.  I began picking off positions and worked my way up to 6th but ran out of time and finished there.

I'm not completely satisfied with the result but I'm very satisfied with what I learned and am now very excited for the next mile.  We head to Castle Rock for some short track racing mid-week, then the Grand National TT on August 4th, and I'm very excited for some TT racing!

It was great to meet some of our west coast sponsors in person.  After this weekend we are in second place 11 points behind the series leader.

Ottumwa, IA.-July 4, 2012


On June 30th, we traveled to Lima, Ohio for the cushion half mile.


This was the 5th Grand National race of our series.  Out of the whole season,
this was the race I was most excited for since I grew up racing on cushion
half miles.  Coming into this race I was 10 points out of the series points
lead in 3rd place, so the main goal was to beat the points leader.

We started out the day very strong being the fastest qualifier for the Pro
Singles and 2nd fastest overall, that gave me pole position for the heat
race.  In the heat race I jumped out to an early lead and focused on making
no mistakes.  I ended up winning heat race number 1 by a fairly large margin.

Since the bike had been working awesome all day long we decided to not
change anything.  I was sitting on the pole position and I picked outside on
the front row for the finial.

Off the start I came out of the first turn in 2nd and was charging hard, running in the first 2 spots for a few laps.  The track immediately brushed off, it was very rough and tough to ride, but I just put my head down and kept chuggin along.

I ended up in 4th place in the main, which brought me within 2 points of the lead in 2nd place.

This was exactly what we need to do before coming to the next National in Hagerstown,
Maryland this weekend.
