AMA Flat Track: Weirbach Racing Announces Rider Rob Pearson for 2013 Grand National Team, Dominic Collindres Returns to Pro Singles Team

2011 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship team Weirbach Racing announced yesterday that they would be adding veteran rider and Illinois-resident Rob Pearson to their team for the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season to ride the team's new-for-2013 Kawasakis in the Expert Twins Series events.  Pearson will join rider Dominic Collindres, who contested the Pro Singles Championship for the Iowa-based team from the Peoria TT event on through the end of the season, eventually finishing in the 4th-ranked spot.

Pearson is shown talking in the rear of the #27 Eaken Racing/KK Motorcycle Supply/Dick Ford/K&N-sponsored team's pit area, with Eaken Racing's C&J-framed Kawasaki and Roeder Racing XR750 awaiting the day's activities at the Springfield Mile II on September 16.

Pearson rode the team's Kawasaki to a season and career-best 4th-place finish earlier in the year at round 11 of the 2012 season at the Knoxville Half-Mile, after having taken the #27 Kawi to a 7th-place finish at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile in mid-August.

The Morton, IL.-resident started the season off on the #27 Memphis Shades/Yamaha/Wiseco/K&N-backed XR750 and took home a 7th-place finish for his efforts on the Babe DeMay-tuned machine at the Ohio National Championship event at the Allen County Fairgrounds. 

Rob also took home a season-ending 4th-place finish for the Memphis Shades team at the Pomona Half-Mile, adding to his nine top-10s for the 2012 season which saw him place in the 9th-place spot in the overall championship standings. 

Pearson got a chance to ride the USC Racing Kawasaki towards the end of the 2011 season at the Springfield Mile II, and then spent some time this year riding for the late Skip Eaken's race team on their C&J-framed Japanese parallel twin.  Now with the 2013 season coming up fast, Bugs will get a chance to throw his leg over another Kawi as Weirbach Racing has also announced their involvement with Racing Unlimited Kawasaki for the new season ahead.

Dominic Collindres follows team owners Ted and Richard Weirbach out to the staging area for heat race #1 at round 13 of the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship season at the Springfield Mile II on September 16.  The California rider signed with the team just over a month prior to the final mile event of the season and won his first race out at the Peoria TT on the #66Y Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett/Spectro-sponsored Honda CRF450R.

Collindres ended the season as the 4th-ranked rider in the 2012 Pro Singles Championship and will be returning to the team for the 2013 season in hopes of garnering himself his first championship and taking a second title in the Pro Singles Championship for the Iowa-based Weirbach Racing team.

December 20, 2012, Ottumwa, Iowa – Weirbach Racing announces the sponsorship support of two racers and a partnership with Racing Unlimited, for the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track Series.   Dominic Colindres #66Y, from Brisbane, Ca. and National number 27, Rob Pearson, from Morton, IL., will run full campaigns for Weirbach Racing in 2013.

Colindres returns from last year’s team, which he joined in August 2012.  Dominic had a strong last half of the season, winning 1 event, and standing on the podium at 2 others.  He finished 4th in overall points in the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship and will be contending for the 2013 title on the teams' Honda 450s.

Colindres’ take on 2013, “So happy to be back with Weirbach racing for the 2013 season.  After winning our first race and having a handful of podiums, I believe we have a strong chance at winning the championship this year.”

Pearson will be joining the team as a new member for 2013 and will compete for the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com and Lucas Oil, in both the Expert Singles and Twins competition.
               

In the 4 GNC Expert Singles events, Pearson will be riding the team's Honda 450s.  Last year Pearson finished 6th in the Expert Twins class and 9th in the combined AMA GNC series.

"I'm really excited for this opportunity with Weirbach Racing and Racing Unlimited.  Combining all our resources is going to prove us to be a championship contending race team,"  said Pearson.

Dick Weirbach announced, “We are joining forces with Alan Rodenborn, owner of Racing Unlimited Kawasaki, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.  Alan will provide 2 C&J-framed Kawasaki’s for Rob to ride in the AMA Twins championship.  Pearson will also have the team’s Harley-Davidson XR750 at his disposal.“
               

After several years as a drag racer, Alan Rodenborn has focused on road racing for the past 14 seasons.  Alan’s Development on the Ninja 650 platform began in 2006.  Rodenborn bikes have won over 40 “Battle Of Twins” National events, en route to 3 national titles.

A cylinder head and engine specialist, Rodenborn will not only be handling the engines on the team's Kawasakis, but will be providing engines and components to other Kawasaki GNC racers and teams.

Rodenborn is quoted as saying “It’s very exciting to be building engines for GNC racing, and is an honor to be working with a team of this caliber.  I’m confident that Dick, Ted and Rob’s experience, will make my transition into dirt track racing a smooth one.”

AMA Flat Track: Weirbach Racing's Dominic Collindres Ends 2012 Pro Singles Season with 2nd-Place at Pomona & 4th-Place in the Championship Standings

Round 9 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season saw the series head to the natural amphitheatre surroundings of the Peoria Motorcycle Club on August 12, and a new rider in the saddle for the '11 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship-winning Weirbach Racing team and it's potent Honda CRF450Rs. 

Californian Dominic Collindres had just signed-on to ride for the team just days before the event that would begin the second-half stretch of the season in the Pro Singles series, and he brought a renewed shot-in-the-a.. to the defending championship-winning Iowa-based effort.

Right out of the box on the #66Y Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett/Spectro-sponsored Honda their new rider showed that he was in control and that the team's decision to sign him for the remaining events for the year was a wise one.

Collindres, in charge at the front right from the start, took his first-ever win over a stacked field of riders vying for the Pro Singles Championship, including eventual series champ Stephen Vanderkuur (3rd-place finish) and part-time Pro Singles contender Justin Reed (2nd-place finish) and wowwed the paying crowd at the longest tenured event on the AMA Pro Flat Track calendar.

After winning round 2 at Daytona (having missed the cut the previous evening in the season kick-off doubleheader round), Wells only scored one more podium finish for the Iowa-based Weirbach team (3rd-place Hagerstown) and three more top-10s. 

Unfortunately, the former Horizon Award winner was injured in a heat race crash at round 12 of the season at the Springfield Short Track and wasn't able to continue the remaining events of the season.  He still finished 7th in the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship based on his early-season results while still on the immaculately-prepped Weirbach Hondas, and is expected to return healthy again for the 2013 season.

The AMA Grand National season-finale was held in Pomona, California.  I was stoked for this race being that it was close to home and I got to hang out with friends and family at my house all week.

 

Last year I didn't do so good, not even making the main, but this year I felt that I had some good experience gathered up from this year.  My goal for the weekend was to finish ahead of Shayna Texter and finish the year off fourth in overall points.

Qualifying was going great.  Dick had the bike set up spot on from the start, and the only thing we changed was tire pressures.  The free practice qualifying I set the ninth-fastest time.  We didn't change the bike at all and in the first qualifying session I qualified ninth again.  We then dropped the tire pressure a little and set the fifth fastest time in the second qualifying session.

For the heat race I was lined up on the front row.  I got a great start and was in second into the first turn.  I made a pass for the lead going down the back straight and led the rest of the heat race.  I felt great in the heat, winning by about a second.  Vanderkuur looked fast in his heat and I knew he was going to be tough to beat. 

 

Going out for the main I felt comfortable with the way things were going.  I got the holeshot and going into turn three a red flag came out.  On the second start I was in about fourth riding by myself and another red flag came out about halfway through the race.

 

This time the start was single file and I made my way into third going into turn three.  The top two riders pulled a large lead on me and we were all evenly spaced.  At about four laps to go I found a fast line and reeled in Maquire who was in second.  I passed him and was left with two laps to go.  I caught up to Vanderkuur on the last lap and couldn't quite get into the draft going down the last straight away and I finished a solid second.

This year Pomona treated me great.  Being on a totally different bike and having so much more experience really seemed to help me out.  I am very happy with the way this year went.  I couldn't be happier to get team Weirbach a win my first race after their previous rider decided to go on his own mid-season.

 

Getting all of my podiums on Weirbach's bikes gets me ready for next year.  Being that I missed five races and joined Dick and Ted halfway through the season and finished fourth in points, Dick, Ted and I feel like we have a good shot at winning the championship next year since I will be at every race.

AMA Flat Track: Weirbach Racing & Dominic Collindres #66Y Santo Rosa Mile Pro Singles Report

Team owners Ted and Richard Weirbach of the Weirbach Racing team out of Ottumwa, Iowa flank their star rider, Dominic Collindres during rider intros for the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship Series main event at round 12 of the 2012 season at the Springfield Short Track on September 15, while AMA Pro Flat Track announcer Barry Boone talks about the upcoming round at the Multipurpose Arena at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

Collindres has proven to be a great match for the 2011 AMA Pro Singles Championship-winning team and since hooking up with the Hawkeye State residents has taken the #66Y Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett/Spectro-sponsored Honda CRF450R to one win (the team's first race together at the Peoria TT on August 12), a 2nd-place finish (at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile just six days later), an 11th-place finish (Knoxville), a pair of 9th-place finishes (Springfield ST above and SF Mile II) and last weekend's 5th-place finish at Santa Rosa.

Without a doubt if these guys had hooked-up early in the season they would be on their way to their first championship together and Weirbach's second as an AMA Pro Singles Championship team.  Collindres missed five events this season and other than points leader Stephen Vanderkuur is the only other rider in the top-4 in points to have missed any rounds in the 2012 season, which in itself is quite an accomplishment in the fast-paced and close racing seen in the junior-feeder series.

With two rounds left to battle in the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship season, Collindres still has a good chance of moving up into the top-3, sitting 19 points out of 3rd heading into the Tucson Half-Mile round tomorrow.  With the quality of the equipment that the father and son duo of Weirbach Racing puts together coupled with Dominic's obvious riding talent, we could be looking at the future champion of the series should they be able to continue on together for the 2013 season.

Dominic Colindres race report from Santa Rosa Mile

Last weekend was the AMA Grand National event held at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, California.  This race was the closest race to my house out of all the races in this season.  I felt a little uncomfortable heading into this event because it was a cushion and I'm still a little off pace on cushions.   It was also a mile with tight corners, which I don't have much experience on.  I would be heading into this event fifth in points and hopefully go into fourth in the overall points.

During the first couple of qualifying sessions the bike was a little off for gearing and we made changes every time I got off the track.  I ended up qualifying ninth the first session and fifth the next.  This would put me in the front row for the heat race.

We made another change right before the heat and felt like we were ready for another heat win. I got a little tangled with some riders off the start and ended up fourth into the first turn. After lap two I moved into first and stayed there for the rest of the heat. I felt very good and felt that I could have a shot at winning the main. For the main I had second choice on the front row.  I picked the outside next to Vanderkuur.

 

I got the holeshot but was passed down the back straight.  Vanderkuur was on rails and he quickly pulled away.  I was in a good four rider battle the whole race with Shoemaker, Spencer, and Anderson.  I was having trouble hooking up down low so I moved to the outside and started following Spencer.  I ended up a close fifth.

 

I feel good with my result because I see that I'm getting way better on cushions and miles.  I'm also learning how to adapt to new tracks a lot faster which is key to doing good at a national.  I am now tied for fourth in points and with some good results at the next two races, third place in points doesn't seem to be impossible to make happen.

AMA Flat Track: Weirbach Racing's Dominic Colindres is Moving Fast After 2nd-Place Finish in Pro Singles Ride at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile

Things may look calm and relaxed at this moment in the Weirbach Racing team pit area at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile round of the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship Series, but believe me things start to get heated up real quickly just a few minutes after this shot was taken as the 2011 Pro Singles Series Championship-winning team was getting ready to go out and make their mark in the ultra-competitive 'junior' series that accompanies the AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com schedule.

And to say that Richard Weirbach (far right, arms folded) and his son Ted (background left, with water bottle) know how to scout out talent is a serious understatement for the Iowa-based Pro Singles Championship competitors.

After winning the '11 Championship with rider Mikey Martin, the team was forced to revamp over the off season and went into the first events of the season at Daytona in March with former Horizon Award winner Ryan Wells as their rider.  Things were looking good for the team as they were fighting for the championship when suddenly just before the Peoria TT round on August 12, Wells decided to go it alone for the remainder of the season.  But instead of sitting back and wondering what to do, the Weirbachs put their efforts into high gear in order to find a rider for one of the biggest events of the season with just a few days to go before the bikes hit the track.

Well, the talent they picked in Dominic Colindres was by far an excellent choice, as their new rider went out and won the first event of his career with the team and almost immediately jumped into the fire of fighting for the Pro Singles Championship.

Six days later and the team was at the Indiana State Fairgrounds mile oval for their second race outing together, and Colindres and the team fought through what was considered a mediocre qualifying spot, made some changes and adjustments, and by the end of the evening the California teenager had brought the #66Y Weirbach Racing/General Engineering/Barnett/Spectro Oils-sponsored Honda CRF450R home into the 2nd-place spot.  And he has also vaulted himself into the 6th-place spot in the 2012 Pro Singles Championship, only 30 points out of the series' lead.

With a 1.5 finishing average in their first two outings together, again the Weirbach Racing team and rider Dominic Colindres have put a firm exlamation point on their quest to repeat as series champions and garner a rider championship for the youngster from California.  Pretty impressive in anyone's book and assuredly in mine and those that know racing in The Rolling Thunder Show and the greatest racing series on wheels in the world.

With any luck, the upcoming rounds at the Springfield Short Track and Springfield Mile II won't get rained out/postponed/canceled and the little team that could can again put their mark on the rest of the field at the Labor Day Weekend gathering inside the Illinois State Fairgrounds.  At this point, the rest of the field might want rain to wash out the great run these guys are having!

Indy Mile Race Report

 

Ottumwa, Iowa -- August 29, 2012

This past weekend was the Indy Mile in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Based on the number of riders signed up and MotoGP being the next day, I would consider this one of the biggest races of the year.  I didn't know what to expect heading into this event.  This would be my third mile and first mile being on the Weirbach Racing team.  I thought I could have another podium finish since I had a 4th-place at the previous mile in Sacramento, California.

I started out the day by meeting Ted Weirbach for the first time and then looking over the bike and discussing bike setup.  I walked out onto the track and saw that it was a cushion.  I asked some riders that previously rode this track how it would be and they told me it would groove up, which is to my liking.

 

I went out for the free practice and struggled with set up and the track.  The gearing was off and I qualified 25th.  We changed the gearing and I qualified 20th in the next session.  Dick and I made some more changes with gearing and suspension for the heat race.

My poor qualifying position put me on the back row for the heat.  I got a great start and was in about 4th place.  I started falling back a little bit but then started to figure out the track.  I was riding the first half of the race in about 6th-place but then started to pass riders every lap.  I caught up to the top-3 and finished the heat in the third position. 

Right before the main event, Dick and I decided to make a last minute gearing change.  I was lined up on the first row, second from the outside.  The race started and I got a horrible start.  Somehow I got up to second place but then overshot turn 3.  The race was red flagged due to a crash in turn 2.

 

I got the hole shot on the restart and led the first couple of laps.  Vandekuur, Palmer, and I battled the whole race, passing each other a couple times a lap.  The white flag came out and I felt like I was in a position to win.  I slipped up a little in turn 3 and Vandekuur pulled away.   I caught up just to finish .057 seconds behind.  This second place was very good for me and the team and gives me good confidence for the rest of the races.

The next race is Springfield, Illinois with a short track on Saturday and the mile on Sunday.  Stop by the pit and say hey!
