GoldenTyre Announced as Sponsor & Spec Tire for 2013 Steve Nace Racing AMA All-Star National Flat Track Series

Indianapolis' Mid-America Speedway hosted their 'Night Before the Indy Mile' event on August 17, 2012 and one of the racers that took advantage of Mid-America's great short track venue was 7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr.  The Prince of Peoria and the #2 man on the winningest-rider list in AMA Grand National Championship racing history was on-hand to further develop the GoldenTyre flat track rubber that he had been tasked with testing in the States for the European entity.

Carr made the rounds this last season while testing for the Italian company, hitting up several racing venues across the map in order to help test and evaluate what could possibly become at the time a new option for flat track racing rubber. 

Today that option became a reality as Chris and GoldenTyreUSA have announced their partership with Steve Nace Racing, one of the best of the best of the AMA Pro Flat Track Blue Crew folks and who also runs the AMA All-Star National Flat Track Series.  GoldenTyreUSA will now be the official spec tire and added sponsor for what is considered the second-tier series on the U.S. flat track scene behind the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship.

In a move that will see rumoured prices $35-50 less per set for 'DT-II'-equivalent race rubber (Goodyear DT-II rubber currently runs around $190/tire), GoldenTyreUSA and Carr will collaborate to supply tires to the Steve Nace Racing series and also help to establish continency funds for amateur racers, while helping to increase the points fund for the pros in the process.

The 2013 AMA All Star National Flat Track Series gains support from European tire manufacturer GoldenTyre through US importer, CC4 LLC.  This agreement will insure competitors with great tires at more reasonable prices, with contingency money opportunities for amateur competitors, and an increase in the points fund for professional racers at all 2013 AMA All Star National Flat Track Series rounds.  GoldenTyre will also assist the Series with unique and engaging marketing strategies while introducing their brand to the American market.

7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr Talks to Dean Adams at SuperbikePlanet.com

Chris Carr gets ready to roll out for the first 450cc Pro practice session of the day at Mid-America Speedway in Indianapolis on August 17, 2012 during the track's hosting of their 'Night Before the Indy Mile' short track spectacular.  With the first flat track session of the day taking place in the background, Carr takes a last look at his #4 DFW Honda/GoldenTyre-sponsored CRF450R before heading out to test some of the new flat track tires he has been working on for the European-based company.

The just-retired former 7-Time AMA Grand National Champion 'officially' hung up his steel shoe at the end of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season, but was seen at several venues throughout the 2012 season either testing tires or fulfilling his announcing obligations for the MavTV television crew that was tasked with filming the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track season's events.

In his quest to help bring another tire provider to the ranks of flat track, Carr worked with the GoldenTyre folks during the 2012 year to help further develop their line of 'DT-II'-style flat track tires to possibly be made available to the masses in the States and make another, or even less expensive option available to the racers.  The week before appearing at the Mid-America event in Indy, the Pennsylvania resident was on-hand at the Kansas fair race circuit not only testing tires but racing in one of the vintage classes.

Carr got a chance to sit down and talk with long-time journalist and SuperbikePlanet.com website operator Dean Adams in the last few weeks, and among the many conversational pieces that were brought out in the 40 minute interview were his testing duties for GoldenTyre, hanging with 9-Time World Champion Valentino Rossi at the 2012 Lucas Oil Indy Mile (held the night after the above shot was taken), and what it was like to set the land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 2009.

Round 16 of the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season saw the last time that Chris Carr would compete at the Springfield Mile.  Carr would go on to finish in the 2nd-place spot on his #4 American Motorcyclist Assoc/Classic H-D/DFW Honda/Arai-backed XR750, just .012 seconds behind winner Willie McCoy.  Not bad for a soon-to-be retiree.

Carr is shown in the shot above heading out for the first practice session of the day at the Springfield Mile II on September 4, 2011.  He would go on to end the season ranked as the 5th-place rider in the overall standings of the 2011 AMA Grand National Championship.

Part of the conversation that Carr had with SuperbikePlanet.com hinged on his long-time involvement with the Harley-Davidson XR750, and it is very candid.  At one point, the former champ even goes as far to say that they were a 'pain in the a..' and one of the 'most expensive race motors' to campaign in any form of racing, usually lasting only 100 miles before needing to be torn down and rebuilt properly, especially 'if you are contending for a championship.'

He may have been on-hand for Mid-America's 'Night Before the Indy Mile' to do tire testing, but make no mistake about it, Chris Carr is still and always will be a competitor to the end.  Here he leads Henry Wiles on the #17 Don's Kawasaki KX450F and Rob Pearson on the #27 Matt Reecy Racing Yamaha YZ450F after getting the holeshot and heading into turn two on the first lap of the 450cc Pro heat race.  Notice the Golden Tyre decal on Carr's #4 DFW Honda swingarm.

AMA Pro Flat Track & Steve Nace Racing's Kevin Snyder Recovering From Surgery

Round 4 of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season saw the return to the track of former National #31, Clermont, Indiana's own Dan Ingram, after being injured at the Springfield Mile in spring of '93.  Returning to the track that almost cost him his life and his racing dreams, Ingram is greeted during the rider intros portion of the program by AMA Pro Flat Track and Steve Nace Racing's Kevin Snyder, a former AMA Grand National Championship racer himself from back in the day.

KevSny, who dutifully helps take care of scoring for the Blue Crew at all of the AMA Pro Flat Track events across the country, recently had spinal surgery performed that will see him have to give up his racing dreams on-track, but is expecting to have him back in full and stronger duty in his scoring roles for the AMA and SNR events after the first of the 2013 season.

This is great news and we just wanted to take the time to give a shout-out to Kevin while he recuperates at his home in Peoria, Illinois and wish him a speedy recovery and let him know that Stu's Shots is thinking of him and will be looking forward to seeing his smiling face back at the track in '13.  Get well soon man, we can't do without you!

Mid-America Speedway on Indianapolis' southeast side hosted their 'Night Before the Indy Mile' event on August 17, 2012 and that evening's schedule included the Indian Arrow Challenge race that saw identically prepared and pristine Indian Arrow 250cc machines compete against one another on the track's nicely-prepped facility at the Marion County Fairgrounds.

Kevin Snyder is shown on the #1 machine battling with Texan and multi-time flat track champion Wild Will Kelley on the #6 Arrow during one of the evening's heat races.  Snyder went on to win the race over Jason Griffin and Andy McRoberts.

Mid-America Speedway's 'Night Before the Indy Mile' Sees Jared Mees Take Pro 450 Main & Kevin Snyder Win Indian Arrow Challenge

For the second year in-a-row, Indianapolis' own Mid-America Speedway hosted their premier event for the season, the 'Night Before the Indy Mile' on Friday, August 17, 2012.  Although last year's event was also dubbed as such after the Indy Mile had been canceled due to the tragedies involved with the stage rigging collapse during the Sugarland concert a few weeks prior, this year's event was in all likelihood it's inuagaral event with a host of top Pro-level riders on-hand to take part in the money-paying 450 Pro Main event.

One of those riders making his return to Mid-America, located on Indy's southeast side at the Marion County Fairgrounds, was Jammin' Jared Mees, the current overall points leader in the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com season.  In the night presented by Harley-Davidson of Bloomington, Indiana, Mees and his Brent Armbruster-prepared Honda 450 framer took control right from the drop of the first green flag in his first heat race, and never looked back the rest of the evening as his Montgomeryville Cycle Center-sponsored mount never missed a lick, taking home the biggest share of the purse for the evening.

 

 

In the Pro 450 main event, Mees leads eventual runner-up Henry Wiles #17 on his Don's Kawasaki KX450F, 3rd-place finisher JD Beach on the #95 USC Racing Kawasaki, Rob Pearson on his #27 Matt Reecy Racing/WKR-backed Yamaha YZ450F and Sammy Halbert on his #7 Woody Kyle Racing/Fredericktown Yamaha-backed YZ450F.  Pearson and Slammin' Sammy would reverse positions at the end with Sammy getting the better of Pearson on the red flag restart to finish 4th overall.

Rob Pearson #27, Henry Wiles #17, Ben Knight #85P and former 7-Time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr #4 all work to get into turn one first during one of the heat races for the Pro 450 class.  With 47 riders on-hand for the big night in the Pro 450 class, a great finish meant top-2 or win in order to make the cut for the main.

Carr was on-hand to test tires for the European-based Golden Tyre, of which he has been testing for the last several months.  The Prince of Peoria had just returned from running the Kansas fair races and had reportedly put on a super show along with former Grand National Championship competitor and current suspension guru, Davey Durelle at the Stockton event.

But things were rough going for Carr as he failed to make the main of the 450 Pro event, giving the paying crowd and packed racing house on hand a very good idea of how tough things were to make it into the main at Mid-America's running of the 'Night Before the Indy Mile' this year.

An immaculate fleet of Mike O'Neil-prepared 1049 Indian Arrow 250 machines await the seven riders who came to town to race at Mid-America Speeday for the 2nd Annual Indian Arrow Challenge event, run as one of the support events on August 17.  Identically prepared, the machines are a work of art and almost seem out of place on a race track and seem more suited for a display in a vintage museum.  But the racing was stellar for these great little bikes!

Wild Will, a former multi-time Number 1 plate holder in VDTRA made the trip from Texas to contest the event after racing earlier in the week at the Kansas fair races.  He finished in the 4th-place spot after battling machine issues throughout the evening. 

AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Series competitor was in town to contest the Pro Singles Series event the next evening at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile.  Griffin made the trip from his home in South Carolina and had the house on it's feet with his race to 2nd-place in the Indian Arrow main event.  For a man with only one arm, he gives up NOTHING on the track and is a great competitor and a super guy!

There were smiles all around after this great event and Mid-America Speedway did a great job of hosting the entire evening and getting the program ran in a timely manner after having battled the dry drought conditions the entire summer and then getting almost 1.5 inches of rain less then 24 hours before racing activities kicked-off on Friday afternoon. 

Jim Terchila and his hard-working crew had it in aces in getting the track prepped and ready for the evening and stayed on top of it all night.  Great job guys!

Night Before the Indy Mile Wrapup The 2012 Night Before the Mile sponsored by Harley Davidson of Bloomington, Indiana was once again a huge success. With 47 riders in the 450 Money Class chasing after a purse of over $4,000 many of the best riders in the country showed up hoping to earn a share of the purse. Last year Jared Mees won after starting from the third row. This year Jared won his heat, and led every lap of the 20 lap main event. Rounding out the top five were Henry Wiles, JD Beach, Sammy Halbert, and Rob Pearson. Additionally Halbert, Mees, Wiles, and Pearson all finished in the top seven at the Indy Mile on Saturday night. A total of 47 riders singed up for this years event including flattrack legend Chris Carr. Unfortuntately, Chris barely missed the main event, but later commented that he had a great time and will be back. The Bob Starke Indian Arrow Challenge also saw a repeat winner with Kevin Snyder winning for the second year in a row, followed by Jason Griffin, and Andy McRoberts. Mid-America Speedway in Indy Announces 'Night Before the Indy Mile' for August 17, 2012

One of the hidden jewels in flat tracks in the Midwest is Mid-America Speedway on Indianapolis' south east side, located at the Marion County Fairgrounds.  Having hosted flat track and speedway racing since the 2007 season, the track has started to grow a big following amongst fans and riders alike over the course of the last few seasons.

Run by fellow flat track fanatic Jim Terchila, the track hosts 8-10 events a year ranging from the youngsters all the way to the Pros in a variety of classes and displacements on the immaculately prepared short track.  During regional and local races on the track's schedules, rider turn-outs of 140-150 with 27-30 races is commonplace.

The racing lines around Mid-America are abundant, too, as evidenced in the shot above taken during the June 23, 2012 event.  Ben Knight #85P leads Jake Tolbert #90J, Brett Terchila #9 (the track president's younger brother), and Ricky Leak #96J.  All are area and/or local riders that regularly contest the events held at the Marion County Fairgrounds track.  Track president Jim Terchila himself regularly runs the speedway class himself and is quite the hot shoe on his brakeless 500cc methanol-burning machine.

Last year on the Friday night of the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP Weekend the track held it's first 'Night Before the Indy Mile' event that was one of the facility's best-attended rounds of the season, and hosted AMA Pro Flat Track riders such as Jared Mees (who won last year's Pro 450 main and is expected back again this year), Henry Wiles, Ion Stear and Rob Pearson, among a big list of other notable Pros.

Next Friday, August 17 will be the track's official 'Night Before the Indy Mile' after last season's Lucas Oil Indy Mile was canceled due to the tragic events surrounding the rigging collapse on stage during the Sugarland concert held just two weeks before the event had originally been scheduled.  Mid-America will again be running a limited program for the evening, and the list of regulars/locals and Pro riders is growing fast.  And the track again will also host the 1949 Indian Arrow 250cc Challenge that drew a nostalgic following for the vintage event's first run.

Mid-America Speedway, Indianapolis, IN.--August 10, 2012—In just one week, one of the biggest weekends of a motorcycle racing fan's dream will all come together in the Indiana capital as the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP will reign supreme for it's 5^th Annual gathering at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

There are many events that help to highlight the great weekend of racing in Indy, but one of the most exciting will be happening on Friday, August 17 as Mid-America Speedway , located at the Marion County Fairgrounds, will be hosting their inaugural 'Night Before the Indy Mile' on the beautifully prepared short track venue located on Indianapolis' south east side of town.

Hosting flat track racing at it's facility since the 2007 season, the local venue will host the stars of AMA Pro Flat Track and some of the riders on the regional and local circuit for what is sure to be a great kick-off to the following night's Lucas Oil Indy Mile held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. For the second year in-a-row, Mid-America will again play host to some of the best racing on wheels in the world as some of the stars of The Rolling Thunder Show in AMA Pro Flat Track will roll into town the night before to contest the Pro 450 Class.

Riders such as current AMA Grand National Championship points leader Jared Mees #9, Illinois resident and Mid-America regular Rob Pearson #27, Canadian flat tracker DougLawrence #73, full-time AMA Road Racer/part-time AMA Flat Tracker JD Beach #95, and Pro Singles riders Zakk Palmer #81C, Ben Knight #85Pand Fight for Dirt Track.com's Tyler Porter #28C. Last year's event in the Pro 450 Class saw Mees, Australian Mick Kirkness and Rob Pearson fill-out the podium.

As most remember from the 2011 season, the originally-scheduled round of the Lucas Oil Indy Mile was canceled due to the tragic results of the rigging collapse on the main stage just over two weeks before the event was to run. Mid-America Speedway hosted it's original outing on Friday night of the '11 MotoGP Weekend and saw a great turn-out of Pro and local talent in spite of the cancellation at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and is expecting an even better turn-out of talent for this year's event on Friday, August 17.

Along with the big names, local favorites such as Dreyer Motorsports/Tucker Rocky-backed Ricky Leak, Nathan and Kevin Wilson and Ken Maynard are also expected to be racing at Mid-America, and Clermont, Indiana's Dan Ingram #31J will also be on-hand. For those of you unfamiliar with Dan, he just returned to the Expert ranks in AMA Flat Track at the ripe young age of 47 years old after being injured and forced to retire prematurely during the '93 racing season. Ingram will be on-hand to sign autographs for the fans and will be selling t-shirts to help support his Expert Twins Series program. All riders will be available throughout the evening to sign autographs and talk with the fans.

Mid-America will be running a limited program at this event, with Pro 450 money class, 250 money class, 30+ vet, 50+ Super Senior, Vintage Light (0-350 air-cooled/twin shock), 85-200 Youth (two and four-stroke), Open Quad and Speedway for the evening's program.

For the second year in-a-row, we will also be showcasing the by-invitation only Bob Starke Indian Arrow Challenge, which features a fine collection of 1949 Indian Arrows. Texan 'Wild Will' Kelley, a former AMA Pro Flat Track competitor and 6-Time VDTRA Pro #1 competitor will be making the swing into Indy after competing in the Kansas Fair races to ride one of these immaculate machines.

Gates are scheduled to open at 1:30 PM EDT on Friday, August 17, with rider's meeting scheduled for 4:00 PM and first practice at 4:30 PM. Opening ceremonies and the first heat races are scheduled to roll off at 7:00 PM. Admission for this great event is only $10.00 for ages 10 and up, with children 5-9 only $5.00.

Mid-America Speedway Resumes Action on Saturday July 14

In This Issue Attention Quads: Mid-America on Facebook and Twitter Mid-America Updates Attention Quad Riders   We also need to remind quad riders that you must have visible numbers. We prefer a number on the front bumper, right side nerf bar, and on the rear grab bar/bumper. Numbers should be made from a color that is easily visible from 75' feet away Black on white, or white on black is the easiest to read. Chrome numbers are very difficult to read. Please remember that if we cannot read your number you will not be scored. I was watching the Quad races in Columbus on June 6th, and many of the quad riders did not have visible numbers, and thus were not scored.   Minor Waivers Please remember that a parent or legal guardian must sign a waiver for any rider under the age of 18 in order to enter the pits. If a rider is going to be accompanied by anyone other than a parent/legal guardian they must have a notarized release signed by the child's parent/legal guardian. We can also email a copy of the release form if needed. Minor releases are not required for the grandstands. Practice Nights The next practice night will be Wednesday, July 18th Practices are generally held each Wednesday provided there is not a race on the following Saturday. Remember that minors must have a parent/legal guardian sign the waiver. Racing resumes at Mid-America this Saturday, July 14th during Dreyer Honda South Night. Dreyer Honda South is located at 595 E. Tracy Road, in Whiteland, IN. They carry top products from Honda, Honda Power Equipment, Fox Racing, Icon, MSR and so much more. Stop in and look for your next sport bike, cruiser, ATV, or even an outboard motor. The featured class this week is Vet 30+ and we will be giving $100 to the race winner in addition to the reqular trophy/buyback. We also need to ask that only tow vehicles enter the pits. With the rider counts that we have been getting, we have run out of room for non-essential vehicles in the pits. We do owe all of the riders and spectators an apology for the dust at the last race. We started watering at 9:30 that morning, and we were putting water down as fast as we could until the fairboard unexpectedly had to borrow the water tank from 1:30-3:30. This allowed the water we had put down to evaporate and we were never able to get ahead of the watering the rest of the evening. We have a solution in place that will allow us to get more water down and also slow down the evaporatation rate. We also ripped the entire surface up last Wednesday and graded it back to being pool table smooth that we are known for.
